    Another Week






    PEOPLE STAND on a building to get a better look at police and forensic experts searching through a site where a bomb exploded, killing one person and injuring several others in Nairobi, Kenya, on Monday.





    AT HOME

    Robert Zoellick, the US nominee to succeed Paul Wolfowitz at the World Bank, holds talks with finance minister Trevor Manuel during his two-day visit to SA. Zoellick also visited Ghana and Ethiopia.

    Five suspects are arrested in connection with the burglary at Archbishop Desmond Tutu's Soweto home on Sunday. Items taken include Tutu's Nobel peace prize, Martin Luther King medal and appliances. The men, aged between 21 and 39, were found in possession of some of the stolen goods.

    The labour department says more than 4,8m SA children between the ages of five and 17 work as labourers. The International Labour Organisation says more than 100m children aged between five and 14 work as labourers on farms and plantations worldwide. Over 50m of these are in sub-Saharan Africa.

    ABROAD

    A Democratic Republic of Congo commission is to review at least 60 mining contracts signed in the past decade. The country has vast mineral reserves, which have attracted many local and foreign looters. Local and international watchdogs have criticised many deals for not conforming to international norms.

    Struggling US car manufacturer Ford is rumoured to be planning to sell its British luxury car marques, Jaguar and Land Rover. The company, which has been on a serious cost-cutting exercise, is expected to make an official announcement in the next few days.

    Thailand's military-installed government says it will seize 21 bank accounts, worth an estimated US$1,6bn, belonging to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

    The United Arab Emirates is preparing to pass a long-awaited company law that will open the services sector to foreign ownership and encourage greater foreign participation in other areas such as the fast-growing financial services industry.

    Multiplex, the developer of Wembley Stadium, receives a £3,1bn takeover offer from the Canada-based Brookfield Asset Management. Multiplex says its directors support the all-cash offer. The Australian firm reportedly lost about £143m on the 90 000-seater Wembley, which opened last month - more than two years late.

    SPORT

    Springbok rugby coach Jake White is cleared of charges of misconduct following an incident last week where a journalist was assaulted.

    Jamaican police say Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer was not murdered but died of natural causes. They also rule out match-fixing in relation to his death during the World Cup tournament in the Caribbean.
