    Alexander Forbes shareholders approve the R8,4bn private equity buyout bid led by Actis Capital. SA's biggest retirement fund administrator will delist from the JSE. Actis increased its offer from R16,25/share to R17.

    A 45-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man are arrested in connection with the killing of musician Taliep Petersen at his Cape Town home in December last year.

    Representatives of Zimbabwe's Zanu-PF ruling party and the main opposition MDC hold talks in Pretoria to seek a solution to the political crisis that reached new heights earlier this year with the arrest and assault of pro democracy leaders. Meanwhile, Zimbabwean media say annual inflation rose to 4 530% in May.

    The US and EU lift their aid embargo on Palestine in a move aimed at bolstering moderate president Mahmoud Abbas while isolating Hamas Islamists controlling the Gaza strip.

    Confectionery and drinks giant Cadbury Schweppes plans to let 15% of its staff go by 2011 as a cost-cutting measure that will also result in about 15% of manufacturing sites closing. Cadbury employs about 50 000 people globally.

    Indian-born author Salman Rushdie is awarded a British knighthood for services to literature. Rushdie's 1988 novel The Satanic Verses prompted protests from Muslims around the world, who said it blasphemed their religion, leading to Iranian Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issuing a fatwa against him in 1989.

    Vilma Espin, wife of Cuban acting president Raul Castro and one of the most powerful women in Cuba, dies on Monday aged 77.

    In final arguments at former media baron Conrad Black's fraud trial, prosecutors accuse him and three other former Hollinger International newspaper executives of fleecing shareholders of more than US$60m.
