    Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe announces he will resign after a series of scandals and a crisis over Japan's support for the US-led war in Afghanistan.

    SPORT

    The Springboks thrash England 36-0 at the rugby World Cup. The Proteas win by 19 runs against England in the World Twenty20 cricket tournament in SA.
