It is my pleasure to set out some thoughts and observations for the 2006 SA Venture Capital and Private Equity Association Yearbook - published for the first time in association with the Financial Mail. The SA economy is experiencing a period of sustained growth and development, and we are reaping the benefits of years of diligent economic planning and fiscal discipline.

Economic indicators suggest a continuation of these buoyant conditions and indeed an acceleration thereof as the massive planned public and private infrastructure spend kicks in during the next three to five years and international investor confidence in the country grows. Positioned as it is as a leading edge indicator, it is to be expected that activity in the private equity and venture capital industry would dovetail that of the economy.
